Today was a big day for Lucas. Today he started Kindergarten. He started out this weekend, being super excited, but when the time came for him to actual go, he was pretty nervous. We had a rough start at home this morning, because Lucas was complaining about everything I ask him to do. I got an "Oh, Man... " when I asked him to eat, brush his teeth, get dressed and get in the van. Lucas doesn't like to be told what to do and when to do it. He likes being in charge. Hence one of the reasons I'm a little nervous about him going to Kindergarten.
He did cooperate with me for some great first day of school photos and helped me make a poster for him to hold. I think he was most excited about the poster because it says he wants to an inventor scientist when he grows up.
We got to school and the "Oh, Man..." continued, when I asked him to put his back pack up, take his notes to his teacher, mark down his lunch, put on his name tag, and sit in his seat. He then pouted and folded his arms in defiance so hard that he fell out of his chair just in time for prayer and the pledge. I stepped away and let his teacher handle getting him calmed down. I was now the last parent left in the room and tears were starting to form in my eyes, because Lucas was being so obstinate. I asked his teacher my last two questions, told Lucas good bye and left knowing that in about 5 minutes he would be fine.
Andy and I went to pick up Lucas at the end of the day together. When he saw us he ran to us smiling and gave us big hugs. The after school care teacher, Lucas's Pre K teacher last year, let us know that he fell and banged his head pretty hard on the gym floor. The Rudolph boys are known for getting injured at school, so she just couldn't believe on the first day he had gotten a bruise and goose egg on his forehead. He had such a good day, his head didn't even phase him.
We asked Lucas how his day was and he told us everything he did with excitement and told how much fun he had! He said he would go back tomorrow! We told him how happy we were that he didn't stay upset and had such a good day. His face changed and he said, "Well, I did get upset once..., Mrs. McBride said to stop talking, and I stuck my tongue out at her, sorry!" I asked him what Mrs. McBride said and he replied, "Nothing, she didn't see it, but I won't do it again!"
We let Lucas pick out what we had for dinner and dessert tonight, to celebrate his first day. We had steak, mashed potatoes, corn, and a freshly made peach pie. He loved his day at school and we all toasted to Lucas over pie! I'm so proud of my obstinate little boy. I know he will struggle to adjust to the structure of school, but I also know that he is wonderful, capable hands and he is going to learn great things this year and have a great time doing it!
